Fort Cox ~ The Coop (Before the fire…)

Welcome to our coop page!

Our coop really isn’t a coop.. It’s really just a barn being used as a coop. It provides the birds with a safe place to sleep, and provides shelter from the elements. I’m sure they will appreciate it more once it starts to snow ;)

Night time digs.

People use, as well as the brooder that is housing the bantam Ameraucanas.

They have 3 separate roosts. I often visit with them and they will roost right on the ledge for attention <3

The shavings have been since changed. They lay their little eggs behind the logs I have in there.

Feeding area. Cage storage.

Seclusion area. Those kennels are HUGE, and can fit an entire LGD in there with no issue. Right now it’s housing an injured NN boy and two bantam Ameraucana roosters above.

Random storage shelf. Includes my tools, extra heat lamp, electrolytes, etc.

The back of the silkie coop can be separated for a broody, or whatever.. Right now it’s open for everyone in the silkie pen. Dustbathing area there. The silkies do not use it. They are dustbath stupid *rolls eyes*

George’s BIG pen. He shares it with Harriet at night and for a bit of the day. Once we have some smooth sizzles to put with him, this will be his breeding pen. I worked all day on this. The thing was filled to capacity with kindling wood!

Grow out pen/Silkie pen/Special Needs pen/Broody pen. Whoever gets long gets to stay. I built them a 5 tier roost on Saturday after moving a huge wood pile. This farming stuff is hard!

The nesting boxes I put together. Really simple design. However, it’s a bit flawed because I am experiencing NNs roosting on the edges at night! Note the poop! I added extra roosting spaces all over the coo in hopes of stopping this. It’s been helping, but both black NN girls are stubborn. I have been tossing them in the silkie coop at night to prevent poopy boxes. Eventually I would like something more sophisticated. For now, it works great!

Bonnie is currently broody in the first nesting box.

The silkies are penned, but have little escape holes all around the fencing so they can go in and out of the pen. I did this instead of removing the entire fence because of Jagger VS Steve issues.. Jagger would kill Steve if he had the opportunity. Or at least torture him a great deal.

Steve will sneak in and out when Jagger isn’t around. hehehe

Jagger is AWESOME with the chicks. It’s just Steve..

And so there you have it.. Our coop. We still call it Fort Cox for old-time sake :)

  1. Nice,I see you have a silkie in with the big girls, hwo does it make out?I have mine seperated cause I was afraid that they would get picked on and my roosters are huge.

    • They navigate the ramps no issues. My rooster and bigger silkie pullet, Lorraine, even roost in the coop with the big guys. The two younger ones cuddle in the shavings.

No picking on the silkies at all with my silkie rooster Steve on guard :P His favourites are the silkie girls, and they are all left alone by the other girls and the beta rooster.

My silkie Lorraine has an attitude on her, and often can be caught pecking my 10 pound buff orpington girl!

  2. Very muich enjoyed your photos!

  3. I nominated you for the Sunshine Award, congrats. You can choose to pass it on or not, your choice.

  4. I am so jealous of your coop. We’ve been looking at making a move to the country, but haven’t found a house to suit us yet. Hopefully by next year.

  5. So pretty. I love your chickens. and their digs are great!

  6. I like the brooder. Are the bantam amaeracaunas mean or nice? Do you know?
